INTERIOR DESIGN FASHION FORCAST
JUDITH CLARK, FIFDA, CID

You have learned recently from a past post about the new pastel colors being presented such as the corals and pinks in an entirely new way than from the 80’s.   It is now forecasted to add to this concept cosmic bright colors! You will be seeing bright yellows, hot pinks and oranges along with peacock blue. When you pair that with a damask pattern, boy do you have pop. This concept echoes back to the 1950’s. Just recently I saw “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” again. Do you remember the apartment of the boy toy of the interior designer, played by Patricia Neil? Many aspects of that high fashion space is being reproduced today including the black and gray damask wallpaper that is used again today. If you use these bright new colors with a damask pattern, it is truly the “Mid Century” look that has become so popular.

LINEN

Linens have come back really strong. Most printed fabrics are also printed on linen or a linen blend. Linen carries that natural look that is so popular in our living green age. Linen is durable and the most resistant fabric to sun damage outside of Solution Dyed Acrylics such as Sunbrella fabrics. The complaint is that linen wrinkle. That is true, but remember; when using linen for draperies or roman shades, you don’t sit on your draperies so they will tend to stay gorgeous with perfect pleats.

NEW FABRIC FINISHES

We are now seeing mat finishes and lustrous finishes patterned together in the same fabric. Look forward to more tapestries, and cut velvets. In fact, velvet in general has made a big come back. There are some lazar cut leathers that look like velvet as well. Lots more ornamentation is also forecast in the form of piping and ribbons on upholstered furniture. Even crewel is making a come back.
